The Baofeng UV-5R is a popular dual-band radio, but programming it manually can be tricky.
Here’s how to do it via keypad and using CHIRP software (recommended).
Press VFO/MR to enter frequency mode.
Use the keypad to input a frequency (e.g., 146.520
for ham radio).
Press MENU → 27 (STEP) → Set step size (e.g., 5.00
or 12.5
kHz).
Press MENU → 27 (MEM-CH) → Enter channel number (e.g., 001
).
Press MENU again to save.
Press MENU → 13 (T-CTCS) (TX tone) → Select tone (e.g., 67.0 Hz
).
Press MENU → 14 (R-CTCS) (RX tone) → Same as above.
Press MENU → 2 (TXP) → Choose LOW (1W) or HIGH (4W).
Get CHIRP from https://chirp.danplanet.com.
Use a programming cable (USB to Kenwood-style).
Install drivers if needed (PL2303 or CP2102).
Open CHIRP → Radio → Download from radio.
Edit frequencies, names, and tones in the spreadsheet.
Click Radio → Upload to radio.
❌ "Error" when programming?
Try a different cable (many cheap ones fail).
Use CHIRP Next (newer version).
❌ Can’t transmit on some frequencies?
UV-5R is locked by firmware on FRS/GMRS (USA).
Use MARS/CAP mod (at your own risk).
❌ No sound?
Check SQL (Squelch) → MENU → 1 (SQL) → Set to 1-5
.
